The company provides manufacturing and engineering services to medical and dental equipment companies, The 17 Briden St. location is the former site of Columbia Tech, Coghlin's contract manufacturing company, which relo- cated to Westborough in 2013. FRAMINGHAM — Framingham- based Staples Inc. has issued a state- ment welcoming "constructive" dia- logue with shareholders after activist investor Starboard Value urged a merg- er with office supplies competitor Office Depot. The Staples board "care- fully considers all actions that would create shareholder value and is com- mitted taking actions that are in the best interest of all of the company's shareholders," the statement read. Starboard Value sent the letter to Staples CEO Ronald Sargent, demand- ing that he begin working a deal with Office Depot, its smaller competitor. FRAMINGHAM — Vision care ser- vices are now available at the Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center (Kennedy CHC) on Union Street in downtown Framingham, the health center announced. In partner- ship with the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) in Worcester, Kennedy CHC has opened an optometry practice at the site. Students and teachers associ- ated with MCPHS's doctoral program in optometry will now be available in Framingham to see Kennedy CHC patients. WORCESTER — A study by students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute has called for a re-creation of a portion of Worcester's Blackstone Canal, citing increased development opportunities as well as improved quality of life for area residents. The study examined options for transforming a portion of Harding Street into the canal that helped the area grow economically in the 1800s. Proponents have argued that a canal could serve as an attraction for both tourism and redevelopment in the city. While the canal still remains below the street surface, interviews with city officials and a review of previous stud- ies caused the students to determine that a re-creation of the canal would be the more feasible option. Annual net income increased 14 per- cent for New Hampshire-based power company Unitil Corp., driven by high- er natural gas and electric sales, accord- ing to an earnings statement.
