WORCESTER — Worcester Polytechnic Institute has been award- ed $1.1 million in federal grants to help revitalize the nuclear power industry, the school announced. The money, from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is part of $15 million in grants the agen- cy has awarded to 37 colleges and uni- versities. The money for WPI will be used for scholarships, fellowships and faculty development. FRANKLIN — A developer of speech recognition technology has completed its acquisition of a research and technol- ogy program from A&T that it says will help make speech recognition more accurate. Interactions Corp. had announced the deal in November to acquire AT&T's product, called Watson. In a statement, Interactions said combin- ing Watson with its Adaptive- Understanding technology will create a platform that "will offer a meaningful alternative to the existing market options available for enterprises and developers." AT&T will receive an undisclosed equity stake in Interactions as part of the deal. WORCESTER — Edwin B. "Ted" Coghlin, the long-time president of Coghlin Electrical Contractors of Worcester and a driving force in the resurgence of Worcester Technical High School, was lauded and remembered for his contributions to the community where he grew up and attended college. Mr. Coghlin died Dec. 10 at the age of 79. He was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester after a fall at his home in Shrewsbury, the Telegram & Gazette reported. Last year, President Obama lauded Mr. Coghlin when the president delivered the Worcester Tech commencement address at the DCU Center. (See editorial, Page 21.) WEST BOYLSTON — Salter School, which has a campus in West Boylston, will pay students in health-related pro- grams $3.75 million to resolve allega- tions of misrepresenting job placement numbers and using deceptive enrollment tactics, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced. A total of $3.5 mil- lion will be used to pay down student loans, and the private school will provide nearly $250,000 in private loan relief and associated payments, a statement from Coakley's office said. That money will be distributed as relief for about 600 stu- dents at specific Salter College and The Salter School campuses in Massachusetts, the statement said. FITCHBURG — Richard S. Lapidus, dean of the College of Business Administration at California Polytechnic University, will become the 11th presi- dent of Fitchburg State University later this year. Lapidus, who will take office July 1, was selected unanimously by the school's 13-member board of trustees after a national search. He will succeed Robert V. Antonucci, who is retiring after 12 years at Fitchburg State. MILFORD — Edward J. Kelly, the presi- dent of Milford Regional Medical Center, will also become CEO of the health care organization in 2016. Kelly will take over the additional role from Francis M. Saba, who is retiring after having served as both president and CEO since 1990. Kelly is a 30-year vet- eran of the health care industry, having served in senior-level roles at MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick.
