w w w. m a i n e b i z . b i z 7 Ja n ua r y 2 6 , 2 0 1 5 Lawyer wins appeal in 'robo-signing' cases Maine's highest court has ordered the removal of a reprimand against a Portland lawyer who was connected to a scandal involving the "robo-signing" of foreclosure documents. e Bangor Daily News reported that Paul Peck, a lawyer at Drummond & Drummond, will have his reprimand removed after a Maine Supreme Judicial Court judge found that a panel for the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar erred in saying Peck violated bar rules. Peck filed for an appeal of the reprimand last May. e panel last April had accused Peck of failing to take "immediate and effective action" after learning in 2010 that a GMAC Mortgage employee, who was a cli- ent of Peck's, was signing thousands of legal documents to foreclose on people's homes without first checking to assure the documents were accu- rate and without having the papers authenticated. Justice Andrew Mead said the "panel's decision is founded upon a 'should have known' standard than actual knowledge," adding that "the distinction is critical." UMaine law school names new dean e University of Maine School of Law has named professor Danielle Conway as its new dean, making her the first African-American to lead Maine's only law school. e law school on Jan. 16 said Conway was selected by a seven-member commit- tee after conducting a national search. She starts on July 1. "American legal education faces major challenges in the years ahead," Conway said in a pre- pared statement. "Our School of Law stands ready to meet these challenges, as well as create new opportunities for students and those who will benefit from the skills and expertise of Maine Law graduates." Conway is currently the Michael J. Marks Distinguished Professor of Business Law and director of the Hawaii Procurement Institute at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, William S. Richardson School of Law. e law school said over her 14 years in Hawaii, she became known as a leading expert in entrepreneur- ship and public procurement law, as well as an advocate for minorities and indigenous peoples. Onpoint scores $2.6M Vermont contract Onpoint Health Data, a Portland- based health data and analytics organization, has won a contract worth up to $2.6 million to continue providing services for Vermont's state-led primary care management system. e Department of Vermont Health Access chose Onpoint in a competitive bidding process for the state-led initiative, called Vermont Blueprint for Health, the organization announced on Jan. 14.
