Lower temps are also better for cows, who will eat more and produce more milk in milder conditions, as New Hampshire-based Samantha Bourgeois notes in the dairy barn while keeping some of her Jersey cows company. "is is their kind of weather for sure," she says. Cooler weather also brings more customers to Joe on the Go, a coffee- business run by Tadd and Lucien Burkett, two brothers from Fryeburg who are both Marine veterans, with their childhood friend, Chester Trundy. e siblings started the seasonal business in 2019, selling only at the Fryeburg Fair and working in general contracting the rest of the year. Have they ever run out of coffee? "We make sure we have enough," Tadd says. After the fair ends on Sunday, the trio will put the coffee hut into stor- age until next year, the birdfeeder ven- dors will head back to Texas to reset before starting Christmas shows in November, and beanbag-and-balloon man Verschoor will go back to his blood-draw and housekeeping duties job at a hospital in Bangor. While Verschoor finds blowing up balloons to be hard on his fingers, he says that packing up for the season will be easy: "We leave everything up besides the balloons, so there's a button that we just press … and then we just hook it up on a truck, and we leave." Next year, he hopes to raise his game with a microphone to attract more visi- tors to his stand. e great thing about fairs is they return every year.
