Maine has an estimated 160,000 small businesses
— which the U.S. Small Business Administration
defines as having fewer than 500 employees. That
number has grown by close to 13% over the past
decade. Of the total, the Institute for Family-
Owned Business estimates that four out of five
small businesses in Maine are held by families,
a total of 128,000. And IFOB says most of those
would have 25 or fewer employees.
This is an illustrative estimate

but it speaks to the important

play in Maine's economy and
