Part of General Dynamics Marine Systems, the ability to design, build and maintain our nation's most advanced warships is a critical element of the U.S. defense industrial base. People have been building ships on the Kennebec River for more than 400 years, and maritime construction has dominated the economy of Bath since the 1800s. General Dynamics Bath Iron Works is now the sole bearer of that legacy, and its impact continues to be felt in the Mid-Coast region and throughout the state of Maine. Bath Iron Works was the name of a brass and iron foundry established in 1826. Brigadier General omas W. Hyde took over the foundry in 1865, following service with the 20th Maine Regiment during the Civil War. Nearly two decades later, he incorporated his diversified marine business interests as Bath Iron Works, Limited in 1884 before expanding into shipbuilding with the acquisi- tion of the Goss Marine Iron Works in 1888. After having several different owners in the 20th century, BIW became a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics in 1995. Since the completion of Hull No. 1 in 1890, BIW has been awarded more than 430 shipbuilding contracts, includ- ing 260 military ships and more than 160 private yachts and commercial vessels. In 1985, BIW won the competition for detail design and construction of USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), the lead ship for the Navy's class of AEGIS guided missile destroyers, which has become the "Workhorse of the Navy." Still going strong more than 40 years later, the DDG 51 program has become the longest-running surface combat- ant shipbuilding program in U.S. Navy history. A major driver of Maine's economy, BIW paid $508 mil- lion in wages and salaries in 2025, making it one of the state's largest private-sector employers. Accounting for supplier spending, worker household expenditures and the on-site presence of the Navy's Supervisor of Shipbuilding, BIW supported more than 15,100 jobs, $921 million in wages and salaries, approximately $1.4 billion in value-added (GDP), and $2.7 billion in total economic output statewide in 2025. rough a national supplier network spanning 920 organizations across 47 states, BIW's operations represent a critical node in the U.S. defense industrial base. Between 2021 and 2025, BIW directed approximately $2.9 billion in supplier spending to businesses across the country, support- ing jobs and wages in states with major defense, maritime, engineering and manufacturing capabilities. e key to BIW's success is its people. e complexity of a DDG 51 requires experts in marine design and engi- neering as well as skilled tradespeople. BIW partners with the Maine Community College System, the University of Maine and Maine Maritime Academy to provide basic and advanced training for people who want to embark on a shipbuilding career, then provides on-site shipbuilder- specific training to new employees. Its acclaimed appren- ticeship program allows employees to earn while they learn, leading to an associate's degree, and the company offers tuition reimbursement for degrees and certifications related to shipbuilding and business, a professional development program for early-career individuals looking for a future in management, and paid internships that include high- value experience doing meaningful work. At BIW, we strive to be an exceptional maritime company that safely provides shipbuilding, component manufactur- ing and specialized services with a world-class team and facilities. Our mission is to design, build and support the highest-quality surface combatants for the United States. General Dynamics Bath Iron Works Company Info W W W. G D B I W.
