X X I I 116 G I V I N G G U I D E 2 0 2 6 – 2 0 2 7 N O N P RO F I T P RO F I L E TEACHING WITH MAPS The Osher Map Library is honored to steward and continue to grow a world-class collection of nearly half a million maps, globes, atlases, rare books, and cartographic ephemera dating back to 1475. At the heart of our mission lies teaching, educa- tional outreach, and ensuring our collections are publicly acces- sible to people of all ages and abilities – right here in Portland, Maine, or online via www.oshermaps.org. Each year, half of all USM students, taking courses in 30-plus different disciplines, engage with our collections through dynamic class visits tailored to individual courses, hands-on workshops, and gallery exhibits. More than 10,000 K–12 and university stu- dents across Maine learn with us every fall and spring through field trips to the Osher Map Library in Portland and our Map Lab in Lewiston, our staff visiting classrooms, colorful interac- tive map kits in a variety of themes sent out to teachers, and virtual map drawing programs. In the summer months, K-12 teachers from Maine and all over the U.S. join us for summer fellowships and professional devel- opment opportunities that bring maps and cartography into classrooms statewide. In supporting our local and international mission, you help us support educational outreach efforts that broaden worldviews, inspire artists and makers, aid scholars and researchers, and anchor students in a deeper understand- ing of place and geography. Our collections are for everyone; all are welcome to visit our gallery, reference room, and attend our public programs. GIVING OPPORTUNITIES All gifts to the Osher Map Library come through the University of Southern Maine Foundation. Annual Fund: Each fall, we run an annual fund. Individual con- tributions, Donor Advised Funds, and corporate gifts are always welcome. These contributions allow us to keep our exhibitions, programming, and educational outreach (field trips, etc.) free and open to the public. Donations make an immediate impact on our operations, allowing us the flexibility to offer dynamic programs and workshops that are responsive to the needs of local educators and students, support the professional devel- opment of K-12 educators, engage in the long-term conserva- tion of our collections, host international gatherings, support researchers from around the world, and so much more!
