For survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking, and other abuse in Maine, Safe Voices is there. e Lewiston-based nonprofit provides shelter, support, and advocacy for people navigating some of life's most difficult moments. is is one of many Maine-based stories featured in Nonprofits Get It Done, a national public awareness campaign shining a light on the essential work of nonprofits across the country. Amid growing challenges facing nonprofits, the Maine Association of Nonprofits (MANP) is leading a statewide effort through the Nonprofits Get It Done campaign to build public awareness of the vital work nonprofits do — and inviting people and busi- nesses across Maine to help amplify stories of how nonprofits are meeting critical needs, solving problems, and strengthening local communities. Every day nonprofits are "getting it done." ey are feeding families, supporting children and older adults, providing health and human services, strengthening our workforce, protecting natural resources, enriching communi- ties through the arts, and responding when people need help. Much of this work happens behind the scenes, close to home, and without much fanfare. e collective impact of Maine's nonprofit sector is often overlooked, even as nonprofits play an essen- tial role in our economy and qual- ity of life. Maine nonprofits employ approximately 100,000 people — 15% of the state's workforce, or roughly 1 in 6 Maine workers. ey pay more than $6 billion in wages each year and contribute approximately $16 billion to the economy. ey also mobilize an estimated 400,000 volunteers annu- ally, contributing nearly $800 million in time and talent to Maine commu- nities. ese numbers tell an impor- tant story: nonprofits are not on the sidelines of Maine's economy. ey are an integral part of it. Making nonprofit impact more visible is at the heart of Nonprofits Get It Done. By uplifting the people and organizations doing the work and highlighting the incredible range of ways nonprofits step up to serve their communities, this campaign tells individual stories that tie into a bigger picture: nonprofits are vital to the well-being of our communities. Nonprofits are deeply embedded in the daily lives of Mainers and people across the country. In addition to Safe Voices, the campaign has highlighted other Maine-based organizations such as: New Ventures, offering free guidance to help people grow their careers, launch businesses, and give back to their communities Aroostook County Action Program, providing food and heating assistance as well as youth enrichment The Dempsey Center, offering a wide range of free services and support for cancer patients and their families. ese are just a few examples of how nonprofits across Maine deliver real solutions to real needs every day. e campaign is rooted in a simple idea: nonprofits are neighbors helping neighbors. ey show up in moments of crisis and power the progress that keeps our communities strong. Nonprofits Get It Done calls on all of us — includ- ing Maine's business community — to support and champion the nonprofits that help our communities thrive. e campaign offers an opportunity for Maine's businesses to recognize and amplify the vital role nonprofits play in communities. Businesses are invited to take action this November during Nonprofit Appreciation Month. MANP will bring Maine's nonprofit community and cross-sector partners together for a statewide Nonprofits Get It Done Week of Action, creating a col- lective moment to celebrate and share the stories of Maine nonprofits. When nonprofit stories are seen, understood and valued, the collective impact of Maine's nonprofit sector becomes harder to overlook.
