Furniture store joins crowded market in South Portland Ashley Store and Outlet opened Aug. 27 at 405 Western Ave. in South Portland. e 44,000-square-foot store is owned by Broad River Retail, a licensee for the Wisconsin based Ashley furniture maker. South Portland is a hub for fur- niture retailers. Opus Consulting moves to larger space After 10 years at 770 Congress St. in Portland, Opus Consulting has moved into a considerably larger space at 16 Middle St., where it purchased a 4,000-square-foot office condo. Gorman Foundation awards $1.2M to Maine nonprofits Portland-based John T. Gorman Foundation has granted a total of $1.2 million to Maine nonprofits that provide assistance with food and shelter. e grants will go to 70 nonprofits in all 16 Maine counties that received funding through the foundation's 2026 Direct Services Grant Program. Earlier this year, the foundation gave $100,000 each to Preble Street, a Portland non- profit that addresses homelessness, and Good Shepherd Food Bank, head- quartered in Auburn. Old Port Advisors in Portland moved to the 4th floor of 16 Middle St. Goodwill Northern New England opened its renovated store at 102 Main St. in Gorham. The Maine Small Business Development Center, hosted by the University of Southern Maine in Portland, announced the retirement of state Director Mark Delisle, effective Feb. 1, 2027. Delisle spent nearly two decades serving Maine's small business community. Spurwink, a behavioral health and educa- tion services nonprofit based in Portland, and the city of Portland announced a partnership between Spurwink's Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic and the city's Housing Opportunities for People in Encampments Program, creating a direct pathway to same-day behavioral health services and ongoing support for individuals experiencing homelessness as they transition into permanent housing. Biodiversity Research Institute in Portland, in partnership with Consensus Building Institute in Cambridge, Mass., said it received a grant of $149,206 through the Mass Clean Energy Center's Offshore Wind Science, Research and Analysis program. The University of Southern Maine Foundation in Portland announced that Linda Varrell, president of Broadreach Public Relations in Portland, and her husband, Paul Cormier, donated $50,000 to the foundation's Promise 10 for 10 Campaign. Separately, Broadreach donated an additional $5,000 to the campaign. Thomaston boatbuilder wins contract for research vessel e Rockland workboat division of omaston boatbuilder Lyman- Morse had two big developments, both for Maryland customers. It won a contract to build a custom 59-foot alumninum research vessl for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. e divi- sion also launched a fully electric- powered passenger vessel to carry up to 150 passengers. e vessel, which is powered by a lithium iron-phosphate battery, is for a Maryland nonprofit, Upstream Alliance, though its home port will be Camden, N.J.
