There was a dropoff of 13.4% in permits issued for single-family homes. Where Maine saw gain, of 16.4%, was in permits issued for structures with five units or more. In that category, there were also 32.5% more structures approved. Measuring against New England peers through May, only Massachusetts recorded more building permits than Maine. After the Bay State (4,487) were Maine (2,723), Connecticut (2,083), New Hampshire (1,846), Rhode Island (917) and Vermont (610).
