At ReNew Developers, we are a sustainable real estate development firm specializing in grid-independent, on- site power generation. On-site power generation can be designed to serve the electrical load of the site's buildings, thus having no demand on the grid, or impact on utility rate payers from the power needs of these properties. We often design these sites with fuel cells or linear generators running on natural gas. This equipment operates significantly cleaner than some of the other traditional options, but still produces some CO2 emissions. Due to recent innovations in the technology, we can now integrate distributed carbon capture equipment into our future development plans, capable of capturing up to 90+% of on-site emissions! This advancement allows us to use fuel cells and linear generators to support customer demand and local grid constraints even more sustainably going forward. For our institutional customers looking to reduce their carbon footprint, transitioning to grid-independent, on-site power generation offers a measurable solution. Utilizing on-site solid-oxide fuel cells or linear generators paired with integrated carbon capture technology pulls CO2, NOx, and SOx from the process instead of releasing them. This can result in a meaningful reduction in a site's overall carbon footprint compared to using standard grid power - so we are excited to be implementing this system! Looking ahead, what trends or opportunities are shaping the future of your industry, and how is your organization positioning itself to lead? Looking ahead, ReNew has set a goal to transition our on-site fuel cells to run on renewable natural gas or hydrogen by 2032. We are particularly excited about the improvements made in Waste-to-Energy technology, specifically plants that use gasification rather than incineration. Incineration burns trash in open combustion, venting the stack emissions, whereas the technology we are discussing is thermochemical gasification. This process heats and eliminates waste in an oxygen-starved chamber, so nothing combusts and there is no smokestack venting into the surrounding air. The output from this process is called "syngas," which a methanation process can convert to renewable natural gas. This RNG will be produced in-state from local municipal waste. It can then be put into service with the utilities or industry, and/or used by us to power our fuel cells, reducing dependency on natural gas and fossil fuels.
