Hartford was once the wealthiest city in the nation, fueled by development, culture, and creativity. Some of the most influential creatives in American history like Mark Twain chose to call Hartford their home. Though Hartford faces new obstacles in the modern era, we can look back to our past to draw inspiration and learn from those that came before us, particularly the artists, authors, and community leaders. A LEGACY THAT STILL LEADS DAVID GRIGGS: Hartford has long been a place where ideas about self-governance and community took root. The Fundamental Orders of 1639 helped shape democratic principles that still guide us today. That same spirit carried forward—through the Charter Oak story, through Hartford's role in supporting the American Revolution, and through early civic investments like public parks. At its core, Hartford's history reflects a belief that strong communities are built through shared responsibility, creativity, and leadership. That legacy continues to influence how the City evolves today. BUILDING MOMENTUM TOGETHER DAVID GRIGGS: Hartford is in the midst of steady, intentional growth. Population is increasing, new housing is coming online, and development is expanding into key areas across the City. Programs like Hart Lift (Hartford Chamber + City of Hartford) have helped bring dozens of new businesses to Hartford, while initiatives like the InsurTech Corridor (CT IFS) and Arena District Investment Fund (MHA) are creating pathways for innovation and investment. This progress reflects collaboration—between public leaders, businesses, and residents—who are actively shaping a stronger, more connected City. This momentum is a result of deliberate decisions made by leaders, investors, and residents who chose to bet on Hartford.
