This moment invites celebration, inspires pride and en- courages reflection on the courage and shared purpose that gave rise to the United States of America. Two and a half centuries ago, a bold concept took shape: That an independent nation could be built on freedom, determination and a belief in the greater good. The men and women of that era showed remarkable bravery, forging a path that has become a symbol of de- mocracy for the whole world. Here in Connecticut, that sense of pride runs especially deep. As one of the original 13 colonies, the Nutmeg State played a pivotal role in the founding of our nation — supplying troops, resources and unwavering support during the Revolutionary War. Connecticut has always been a place where people come together to solve problems, support one another and help shape the future of our nation. As communities across all 169 municipalities come together to commemorate this historic an- niversary, we are reminded that Connecticut's story is inseparable from America's story. Connecticut has been home to pioneering advancements that have shaped communities and advanced the evolution of medicine. As early as 1822, the opening of what is now known as the Institute of Living signaled a groundbreaking shift in how society approached mental health — recognizing the importance of humane, compassionate care at a time when such thinking was rare. Just decades later in 1860, Hartford Hospital opened its doors, laying the foundation for generations of clinical innovation, research and patient-centered care that continue to this day. These milestones represent a con- tinued commitment to progress, to discovery, to improving lives. Just as our nation's founders looked beyond the present to imagine a better future, we, too, dedicate ourselves to continually push forward, guided by purpose and possibility.
