32 Worcester Business Journal | May 4, 2026 | wbjournal.com S P E C I A L A D V E R T I S I N G S E C T I O N | Business Profiles 2026 P eople oen ask us what the difference is between a credit union and a bank. Both offer tech-driven financial solutions. Both typically provide some amount of deposit insurance. Both are heavily regulated. Beyond those similarities, the differences take shape. Worcester Credit Union is a 501(c)(14), the non- profit version of a bank. at means we are beholden solely to those we serve and not to private investors, whom few, if any, have ever met. e people and businesses banking with Worcester Credit Union are our shareholders, and serving those members is the sole reason we exist. Internally, we strive only to improve our members' financial condition and maintain sustainability by offering 100-percent insured share accounts and deposit/loan rates that tend to be more generous than elsewhere. Another question oen asked of us: How does someone become a member? Membership is simple: open and maintain a savings account with at least $5. Unlike a bank that has potentially unlimit- ed geographic scope, Worcester Credit Union is community-focused by design. Eligibility to open a savings account is limited to those who live, work, worship or attend school in Worcester County, and to the families of our members. Eligible businesses must have similar ties. In other words, our financial services are keenly focused on supporting you, your neighbors, and others here in the heart of Massa- chusetts. Wall Street bankers, we are not. Banking With a Credit Union Is A Choice, But It Should Not Be A Hard One Worcester Credit Union's roots date back to 1934, the year President Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act. We initially formed to meet the financial needs of Worcester's teachers. In 1969, we merged with the Worcester Department of Public Works Credit Union, and merged again later with the Worcester County Courthouse Employees' Credit Union in 1998. In 2024, regulators allowed us to expand membership eligibility beyond Worcester and its surrounding towns to all of Worcester Coun- ty. In 2026, we will celebrate 92 years. We offer the same general services that bankers do, but we approach the role with compassion, viewing ourselves as servants. President & CEO Lucas J. Miller, having spent decades in finance on both the for-profit and nonprofit sides, is adamant about the way we do what we do. "If you want- ed confirmation that some executive has sat in a for-profit boardroom pontificating about how to squeeze the customer, I can affirm with disgust." A Worcester State chemistry graduate and an attorney, President Miller joined Worcester Credit Union in June 2024. More recently in 2025, former Worcester Credit Union President & CEO Karen Duffy was inducted into the Cooperative Credit Union Association's Hall of Fame and the Credit Union House Hall of Leaders for a lifelong list of accomplishments, including breaking down twen- tieth-century barriers as the first woman to chair the league and for her extensive work supporting communities and the credit union movement as a whole. We proudly salute Ms. Duffy, who served as Worcester Credit Union's President & CEO for several decades until 2019. n Worcester Credit Union: Banking For People, Not Profit Street Address: 520 West Boylston Street, Worcester, MA Phone Number: 508-853-9966 Website: www.worcestercu.com Product or Service Description: Financial Products & Services Number of Employees: 16 Head of Company: Lucas J.
