After reviewing reflections from past WBJ leadership award recipients, I came to an important realization: The foundational characteristics of great leadership — authenticity, listening, and clear communication — have already been well defined. These principles remain timeless and I couldn't agree more. Recently, I attended an industry seminar where a speaker described himself as a "Futurist" — a title that admittedly lacks a formal job description and perhaps relies a bit on speculation. His message centered on Artificial Intelligence, clearly something that is no longer in the future. It's here, and it's here to stay. What remains uncertain is how each of us will integrate it into our businesses, our leadership approach, and our personal lives. One statistic he shared stood out. Some estimates suggest that AI could return up to 25% of our time back to us – simply through increased efficiency. Even if that's an optimistic number, it raises a far more important leadership question – what will we do with the time we save? Having spent my career in sales and leadership, I have always believed that relationships are the true differentiator. As our world becomes increasingly digital and, at times, impersonal, I challenge myself and my team to use the extra time that is freed up by technology to deepen our human connections — both professionally and personally. Beyond the obvious business advantages, research consistently shows that meaningful social interaction improves individual well-being, engagement, and even longevity. My personal commitment is simple; I will use the time that technology gives back to me to invest it in people and encourage my team to do the same. Here's just some of the simple things that help me to do that. Resist the temptation to hide behind screens, emails, or automated responses – pick up the phone, meet for coffee or even lunch, send a handwritten note — yes, they still exist and it will make you stand out. In an era increasingly filled with algorithms and chatbots, authentic human connection will become the ultimate leadership advantage. The leaders who stand apart in the next decade will not be those who merely adopt technology fastest — but those who use it to become more human, not less. 2026 Key Philosophies Team First: I've learned that a business only goes as far as the people behind it. Putting my team first has turned work into joy, collaboration, and shared success. Also, communication with your team: Keeping communication open with my team has been one of the biggest reasons we stay aligned and motivated together. Be Creative and Dream Big: Don't be afraid to dream bigger than what seems possible and sometimes be a little delusional, that's where the magic starts, and you can always refine and filter the ideas later into something more achievable and practical. Balance, Something I'm Still Working On: You need rest days too. I've discovered that taking intentional rest days isn't slacking. It's recharging so you can show up as your best creative, strategic, and motivated self. Time Management: Being disciplined with my time has helped me focus on what matters most and make sure every minute moves us closer to our goals without losing our sanity. It's Not Who You Know, But Who Knows You: It's less about how many people you know and more about how many genuinely see your passion and work. When you show up with energy and authenticity, the right people take notice. Never Stray From What Made You Do This in the First Place: There have been days when I wanted to quit, but remembering that this venture began with a love for curation, creation, and community always pulled me back and gave me enough energy to keep going. Purpose is so much stronger than any challenge, and seeing the difference our work can do for others is extremely rewarding and fulfilling, both for customers and for your team.
