M ore than a decade ago, Julia Brinson, a Women United member, started her volunteer journey as a United Way Reader, a program that matches volunteers with elementary school students to support them with reading skills. From an early age in life, Julia's dad and grandmother demonstrated the value of giving back, and that became an important value to her. In addition, she recognized the importance of people from marginalized communities seeing someone who looks and sounds like them doing impactful community work, and the responsibility of serving as a role model for others who dream of having similar opportunities. MEET JULIA BRINSON "To whom much is given, much is required." Last year, United Way Readers served 14 locations in Hartford with 86 volunteers reading to 138 students who have seen a 98% increase in their reading proficiency after completing their reading sessions.
