The lion's share of the Pine Tree State's lawyers are in Cumberland County, which includes Portland. There are six counties where the number of attorneys is fewer than two dozen. The most pronounced shortage might be in Piscataquis County, which has six lawyers, according to the most recent annual report from the Maine State Bar Association. That's one lawyer per 2,900 residents (compared to one per 269 residents in Cumberland County). To me a lawyer is basically the person that knows the rules of the country. We're all throwing the dice, playing the game, moving our pieces around the board, but if there's a problem, the lawyer is the only person that has actually read the inside of the top of the box. — Jerry Seinfeld
