Weddings unite a couple in love, but they are ultimately very stressful affairs. The financial planning, logistics, and pressure to please everyone can weigh down what the actual day is all about, creating a life together. This is why I celebrate couples who create a unique wedding that fits their personalities and gives guests a look into their world as a couple. As a little girl, I never planned my wedding. The only thing I cared about was getting married on September 22nd, the same anniversary as my grandparents and parents. When we became engaged, I wanted to elope on a mountain with a low-maintenance "traveling wedding dress". My original Bohemian idea turned into a beautiful tradition- al church wedding surrounded by supportive friends and family. Although not what I had originally envisioned, it turned into one of the most relaxing and grounding days of my life, and I partly credit the shark costume for helping us get into that mindset. The stressors of planning a wedding combined with the shyness of reading wedding vows made us a bit serious as we stood pro- fessing our love for one another. So, when I popped around the tree wearing a giant blue monstrosity, the humor and surprise broke the ice, and we felt completely ourselves as we went through the rest of the day. Other moments that will forever stand out for us: DJ saying "I Do" at the wrong time and making everyone laugh; our first dance to Chris Stapleton's "Tennessee Whiskey", the song he sang when we first met; my grandfather walking me down the aisle; the beau- tiful speeches made by loved ones; and group line dancing in my white cowgirl hat that got passed around all night. Every moment was perfect and simply felt like "us," and it all started with a comi- cal first look that set the tone for the rest of our day. Weddings are stressful, and life is short, so take the time to add pieces of yourselves into the day and make it memorable. And if the opportunity to wear a shark costume ever comes up, say yes, be- cause a little laughter can go a long way. n Sloane M. Perron is a freelance writer and Central Massachusetts native.
