A s an HVAC Controls Application Engineer, Alison Zerio reviews each project's scope, drawings, specifications, and equipment submittals. Based on the sequence of operations, she selects control valves, dampers, and actuators. She then develops detailed flow and wiring schematics. Once the HVAC controls design is complete, Zerio sub- mits the package for approval. Upon approval, electri- cians and programmers use it as a blueprint to imple- ment and program the building automation system to meet project requirements. What inspired you to pursue a career in construction, and how did you get started? Back at Glastonbury High School, we had an English project to research a career that fascinated us. I chose civil engineering and ended up selecting that as my major at CCSU. After two semesters and completing my associates, I switched to construction management and never looked back. What skills or strengths do you believe have contributed most to your success in this field? I believe some of the skills and strengths I've contributed the most are my organization and thoroughness when laying out the design of our controls systems. Attention to detail is key as small things can snowball down the line if not addressed. What advice would you give to young women considering a career in construction? Have confidence in yourself and your decisions! Don't be intimidated if you're the only woman in the room, see it as a strength and not a limitation. Always be engaged, curious and take any opportunity to learn from those around you, everyone has something valu- able to offer!
