Changing lives for the better Amina Hassan, 31 Executive director, Her Safety Net Greatest achievement: Witnessing the transformation of countless indi- viduals and families as they settled into their new environment. Over the past decade, I've had the privilege of guiding community members through chal- lenges, helping them find jobs, access resources and build connections. The most rewarding moments have been when someone shares how their life has changed — whether it's landing their first job, getting out of an abusive relationship, graduating or feeling a sense of belong- ing. Knowing that my efforts contributed to these positive changes is truly fulfilling. Passion project: Journaling Lightbulb moment: When I realized the profound impact that community support can have on survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. I was attending a local event where a survivor shared her story. She spoke about the isolation and fear she felt, but also about how a simple act of kindness — a community mem- ber offering help — changed everything for her. It struck me that many women endure similar struggles in silence, lack- ing access to support systems that could empower them. This moment illuminated the urgent need for a dedicated space where women could not only find safety but also receive resources, education and a sense of belonging. It was clear that fostering a community of support could help break the cycle of abuse and lead to the overall well-being of families. This realization fueled my passion to establish Her Safety Net, focusing on empowerment, healing and building a network of support for women and girl survivors.
