I find a great sense of achievement in my naval ser vice, moving back to Maine, star ting a family and finding profes- sional fulfillment in support of Mainers. Passion project: My wife and I bought a piece of land in Oxford County a long time ago with the dream of build- ing a cabin. We chip away at the work a little bit each year hoping to finish by the time our young kids are ready to go skiing. Lightbulb moment: During my master's program, I read a lot about economic development policy and out- comes. This time was influ- ential in determining what I wanted to do when I moved back to Maine. Influential book: "The Untethered Soul," by Michael Singer. I have always str uggled with mindfulness and being in the moment. This book and concept were so different from anything I had read before and helped me at a time when I needed it most. Personal hero: Joshua Chamberlain. I wrote my undergraduate thesis on a Chamberlain model of lead- ership for military officers based on scholarship, commitment, and compassion. Favorite movie: I've always loved the movie "Master and Com- mander" and wished they made more movie adap- tations of the books. Favorite quote: During Plebe Summer at the Naval Academy, we were required to mem- orize various speeches, poems, songs and other "rates." One of the speeches we had to memorize and recite was "The Man in the Arena" by Teddy Roosevelt. It encour- ages you to take risks in support of a worthy cause and to bolster your courage in the face of criticism. Best way to recharge: I am lucky to have two toddlers at home, so when I am not at work, you can find me playing tea party, building forts, and riding bikes around Brunswick. Maine's biggest challenge: Ensuring that all Mainers have access to oppor tunities to build a sustainable and pros- perous future. D i n n e r p a r t y g u e s t s : Frances Perkins, Joshua Chamberlin and Ed Muskie. Three Mainers that led in uncertain times with resolve.
