Contributed Photo UConn closes 7 academic programs after low-enrollment review The University of Connecticut has permanently closed seven academic programs and placed dozens more under monitoring following a compre- hensive review of low-enrollment offerings, according to the university's Board of Trustees. The closures, approved during the board's Aug. 5 meeting, affect four graduate certificate programs and three degree programs in mathematics and medieval studies. An additional 70 programs across multiple colleges will be monitored annually, with plans to improve enrollment and completion rates. The review examined programs with completion rates below specific thresholds between the 2018-19 and 2022-23 academic years: 100 or fewer undergraduate degree completers; 50 or fewer master's degree completers; 25 or fewer graduate certificate completers; and 10 or fewer doctoral degree completers. The permanently closed programs include graduate certificates in global health, obesity prevention and weight management, school law and addic- tion sciences. Also eliminated were bachelor's and master's programs in applied mathematical sciences, math- ematics-physics, politics and popular culture, and medieval studies. New workforce development center planned in Canton to serve adults with disabilities A new workforce development and independent living center is planned in Canton, which will provide job training and independent living skills for individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism. The facility will be built at 225 Commerce Drive and operated by the nonprofit Favarh, which has its main office on the property. It will be the first comprehensive facility of its kind in Connecticut, according to Favarh. Favarh has received $2.5 million in funding for the project, which was approved by the state Bond Commis- sion earlier this month. The total project cost is estimated at $5 million; Favarh is seeking donations to cover the remaining $2.5 million needed. Services at the center will focus on basic job preparation and workplace readiness. Stop & Shop to close 2 warehouse facilities in CT Stop & Shop confirmed that it intends to close two warehouse facili- ties that service home delivery orders in the fall. The facilities are located in Windsor and Norwalk. A spokesperson for the grocery store chain said that the roughly 150 employees affected will be offered other career opportunities within the company. The spokesperson said the decision to close the locations was difficult, but there will be no impact on customers, who can continue to shop online for pickup, or home delivery, after the facilities close. Last year, Stop & Shop closed five stores in Connecticut. NY company backed by private equity acquires New Britain landscaping business A New York company backed by a private investment firm has acquired a commercial landscaping and snow-removal company based in New Britain. Riverview Landscapes has bought All State Landscape Services LLC, marking the company's first expan- sion into Connecticut and its 16th acquisition since 2022. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. All State Landscape Services, founded by Peter Niro III and his father in 2013, serves commercial clients throughout Connecticut. Riverview Landscapes provides landscaping and snow services to thousands of customers throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts and has more than 500 employees.
