IT'S IN OUR ROOTS 2025_0618_MeBiz_RELEASE.indd 1 2025_0618_MeBiz_RELEASE.indd 1 6/17/25 10:33 AM 6/17/25 10:33 AM Estabrook's expands production with high-tech greenhouse in Pownal B y T i n a F i s c h e r Y armouth-based Estabrook's nursery and garden centers has completed a state- of-the-art commercial greenhouse in Pownal, which at 55,000 square feet is nearly as large as a football field. Tom Estabrook told Mainebiz that the new facility doubles the company's pro- duction capacity while reducing the amount of time required to grow plants to the ready-for-market size by 30%. All systems are computer controlled. Mechanized curtains close at night to hold in heat. Radiant heat lines the floor, and piping along the walls and glass roof provide warmth year-round, from a 30,000-gallon propane tank. Despite the facility's expansive size, Estabrook said fuel consumption here will be less than in the company's Yarmouth location, where there are 27 traditional greenhouses covering 45,000 square feet. Scarborough-based CWS Architects provided design expertise and Sevee & Maher Engineers, headquartered in Cumberland, handled sitework. The greenhouse was supplied and built onsite by the Netherlands-based company, Attko, which has a U.S. facility in Powder Springs, Ga. Plans call for eventual expansion on the 16 acres in Pownal to a total of 205,000 square feet of greenhouse space over an anticipated four-phase timetable. CONSTRUCTION NEWS FROM AROUND THE STATE f Windham, N.H.-based Beylin Develop- ment has broken ground on a mixed- use project in Yarmouth village. The 19,545-square-foot, three-story building will offer 15 condominiums and three first-floor commercial spaces. Com- pany president Simon Beylin said his in-house construction team expects to complete the project by summer 2026. f Pennsylvania-based A.R. Building Co. is developing a 120-unit apartment complex on a 56-acre lot at Eight Cor- ners in Scarborough, which will include 10 buildings and a clubhouse. Two of the 12-unit buildings are nearing completion, and company spokesman Cam Reber told Mainebiz he expects to begin pre-leasing in the coming weeks. f Portland-based Developers Collabora- tive is finishing an affordable complex for seniors in Rumford. The project includes 33 one-bedroom apartments in a 28,000-square-foot complex at 101 Hancock St. All units are reserved for residents 55 and older. Portland Build- ers Inc. is the construction company and Invivid Architecture, of Portland, handled the design. f Gorham-based Great Falls Construc- tion has underway in Auburn a mixed- use, market-rate apartment building at 186 Main St. The four-story build- ing will have 18 apartments on the three upper floors and two commer- cial spaces on the ground floor, for a total of 30,000 square feet on a 7,100-square-foot lot. Great Falls is doing the build. CWS Architects, based in Scarborough, and Sebago Technics, headquartered in South Portland, are also part of the team.
