CT reverses job-losses streak, adds 6,900 positions in April After two months of job losses, employers in the state added 6,900 jobs during the month of April, according to the state Department of Labor. Despite the gains, the state's unemployment rate ticked up slightly by one-tenth of a percent to 3.7%. The national unemployment rate is 4.2%. The state recorded a combined 5,800 job losses during the months of March and February. The expansion, first announced in 2021, includes lengthening the runway from 5,600 to 6,575 feet, constructing a new terminal building and increasing parking capacity. The release of the economic impact study comes as there continues to be significant opposi- tion to the expansion plan from both environmental campaigners and local residents. Study: Expansion of Tweed New Haven Airport will have $444M economic impact by 2027 A new study commissioned by the Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport Authority projects that the planned expansion of the airport will generate some 2,400 jobs by the end of the decade. The report, prepared by UConn's Center for Economic Analysis, also forecasts $100 million in construction impacts by 2030, and $444 million in total economic impact to the state by 2027. The study considers two potential scenarios. The first assumes continued operation by Avelo and Breeze, the airlines currently flying out of Tweed. The second assumes additional TRUMPF's new Smart Factory is equipped with sheet metal fabrication equipment, connected to storage and material handling systems and a fully automated paint line. Farmington's TRUMPF becomes first company to get funding under state's supply chain initiative M achine toolmaker TRUMPF has become the first company to receive funding under Connecticut's $25 million Strategic Supply Chain initiative. The company, which has its North American headquarters in Farmington, will receive a $2.5 million grant to enhance its production capacity and bring manufacturing operations into Connecticut. The Department of Economic and Community Devel- opment has also approved TRUMPF for incentives of up to $373,000 in tax rebates if it creates 63 new full-time equivalent jobs. TRUMPF, which employs approximately 500 people in the state, recently completed a $40 million expansion project, building an advanced "Smart Factory" at its Farmington campus. Under the supply chain initiative, companies can apply for grants ranging from $500,000 to $5 million for projects that will increase their production capacity to support new work.
