The Conservation Fund, an Arlington, Va.based nonprofit with a Maine office in Freeport, bought a 44,000acre swath of mountain and forestland along the Canadian border in northwest Maine. It paid $44.4 million in a transac tion that was finalized Oct. 15 and announced Nov. 29. The Hilton Family Forest, as the parcel is known, is in Somerset and Franklin counties. The forest supports the local timber and maple sugar indus tries, and is a hub for recreational use, including hiking, biking, hunt ing, fishing, trapping, snowmobiling and ATV riding. MaineHealth Healthy Community Coalition Farmington was awarded a fiveyear, $625,000 federal grant from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy under the DrugFree Communities Support Program to strengthen ongoing ef forts in preventing youth substance use in its community. Skowhegan Savings Bank said its employees donated a total of $20,000 to 20 local nonprofits dur ing the bank's fourth annual Season of Giving. Staff at the Starbucks cafe on Waterville Commons Drive filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to unionize, calling for a "voice on the job." St. Mary's Health System in Lewiston said it plans to close its intensive care unit at the end of the year, citing low patient volume. Pickle's Potions and Lotions, which has a flagship store at 130 Main St. in Winthrop, plans to open a Waterville store at 36 Main St. MaineHealth Franklin Hospital in Farmington has plans on the draw ing board for a twoyear renovation and expansion project.
