The new building will be home to the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale, Yale Repertory Theater, and the university's under- graduate program in theater, dance and performance studies, according to an application submitted to the City Plan Commission. The new building will include rehearsal, classroom, office and meeting spaces; production and technical shops for set, costume and lighting design; a 100-seat studio theater; and a new 400-seat Yale Repertory Theater. Yale's performing-arts programs are currently spread over several buildings throughout the school's New Haven campus. The proposed project will take place in four phases beginning in summer 2025, and be completed by summer 2029. In 2021, entertainment industry magnate David Geffen announced a $150 million gift to Yale University's drama school. Yale has used the money to make its drama school tuition-free. in a national search for his "ability to steer institutions toward enduring financial strength while ampli- fying their brand and deepening campus pride." He will begin his new role at the liberal arts college in Hartford on July 1, 2025. He will succeed Trinity President Joanne Berger-Sweeney, who announced her retirement plans earlier this year.
