Versant Power awarded 10 grants totaling $100,000 to Maine non- profits in its service area in honor of the company's 100th Anniversary. Recipients included Aroostook House of Comfort, Central Aroostook Humane Society and Hope and Justice in Presque Isle; Bangor Humane Society and Ronald McDonald House Charities in Bangor; Habitat for Humanity, Orland; Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Ellsworth; Maine Youth Fish & Game Association, Milford; Sarah's House of Maine, Holden; and SPCA of Hancock, Trenton. U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King and U.S. Reps. Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden announced that the Maine Coast Fishermen's Association received $1.8 million and the Eastern Maine Skippers Program received $296,342 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Young Fishermen's Development Program to support training and workforce development. The Maine Community College System in Augusta said that fall en- rollment is up 10%, surpassing a total of 20,000 students for the first time at its seven colleges. The Maine Department of Transportation was awarded $53.3 million by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Railroad Administration's Fiscal Year 2024 Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Program. The funding will be used for freight rail upgrades to enhance safety, speed and reliability along two Eastern Maine Railway mainlines in Penobscot, Aroostook, Washington, and Piscataquis counties and to rehabilitate currently dormant tracks to provide a connection to the One North Bio-Industrial Park in Millinocket.
