80 Looking Ahead W e have made forward progress in so many areas: a shatter- ing of political glass ceilings at the state and national levels, break- through mRNA technology that enabled COVID-19 vaccines that brought an end to a devastating global pandemic, near universal health insurance coverage in Massachusetts, and more. Yet, we have regressed in other areas including a fray- ing of our social fabric, growing income inequality, and threats to democracy at home and abroad. And there are new challenges and opportunities that have emerged, including but not limited to artificial intelligence, climate change, and social media, with even more to come that we cannot yet fathom. Come what may, this foundation will re- main grounded in our mission to improve the health of those who live or work in Central Massachusetts. Our approach to date has been to invest deeply in the areas where we can have the greatest impact, and we will continue to be strategic in how we deploy our resources moving forward as stewards of these assets and of the promise of a healthier and more equitable future. So many people and organizations have contributed to the rich history that is encapsulated in these pages. Though this list is by no means complete, thank you to the New England Business Media team, especially the talented designer Kira Beaudoin; Ball Consulting Group for excellent editing; Michael McDermott of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Worcester Public Library staff for searching through archives; everyone who shared information and reflections; and The Health Foundation's directors and staff, especially Daniel Germain who served as "quarterback" for this significant undertaking. Finally, and most importantly, thank you to our founders for their foresight and dedication to create this foundation and without whom this organization would not exist. What an incredible foundation – literally and figuratively – they have built. What a lasting legacy they have bequeathed to Central Massachusetts. 2024 Staff: (L-R) Jennie Blake, Vice President for Programs, Dr. Amie Shei, President and CEO, Michelle Ewing, Director of Finance and Administration, Daniel Germain, Grants and Operations Manager In the 25 years since The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts was launched, much has changed in the region, the state, and the world.
