wbjournal.com | August 19, 2024 | Worcester Business Journal 33 4 0 U N D E R F O R T Y Before taking over Ace, a business founded by his grandfather in 1963, Dan Joslyn sought to put his criminal justice degree to good use by signing up for the Worcester County Sheriff's Office academy. Graduating from the academy in 2012 with high marks, he joined the county sheriff's department. While he played an important role in many of the department's endeavors, including the launch of its Graffiti Removal Unit and the establishment of a team tasked with tracking down contraband within the department's prison, Joslyn kept his ties to the family business, learning more about its operations on his off days. The more he learned, the more interested he became in taking over Ace from his father, leading Joslyn and two other employees to purchase the business. Since hanging up his sheriff's hat in 2022, Joslyn has helped Ace streamline opera- tions by utilizing technology, helping preserve the family legacy by guiding the company toward the future. At home, the Joslyn family provides an emergency placement home for children in the Mass. Department of Children & Families system. His and his wife's experi- ence in fostering children even before the birth of their son led them to adopt a daughter in June. – E.C. What superpower would you most like to have? The ability to see the future. That kind of foresight would be invaluable in business. What is the hidden gem of Central Massachusetts? Maybe not so hidden, but a definite gem: The Hanover Theatre & Conservatory for the Performing Arts. Who's career would you most like to emulate? Perhaps it's cliché, but I have to go with my father or my grandfather on this one. Class of 2024 Dan Joslyn, 36 Co-owner and treasurer Ace Temperature Control, in Worcester Residence: Auburn Birthplace: Worcester College: Worcester State University After working in the jewelry industry for 12 years, McGuinn decided to make a drastic career change to construction and recycling. She became construction recycling manager of Westbor- ough-based E.L Harvey & Sons in April 2022, and since then has sold and managed the recycling services for local construction proj- ects. Large projects such as WuXi Biologics, a $30-million biomed- ical facility underway on Belmont Street, UMass Memorial Health's 72-bed hospital building on Plantation Street, and the Amazon facility in Charlton have generated $2 million in revenue for E.L. Harvey. She is involved in several nonprofits, including the Young Professional Women's Association in Worcester, previously serving as vice president. In her prior role at Sachs Jewelers in Shrewsbury, she established founding partnerships between the company and the Worcester Red Sox and exceeded annual sales goals, contributing to $6 million in revenue throughout her 11-year tenure. While McGuinn admits making a career change was challenging, she will always value her strength of making strong interpersonal connections to make a difference in the community. - S.B. If you had your own late-night talk show, who would be your first guest? Judith Leiber. From starting a business to achieving international recognition, her entrepreneurial journey offers inspiration. What is the most underrated part about working in Central Mass.? Community atmosphere. Towns and cities have a strong sense of community, with local events, festivals, and community gatherings. Whose career would you most like to emulate?
