Like others, Foley recognized young hires desire to work for compa- nies reflecting their values, but they're often busy proving themselves during long hours at the offices and are unaware of the leg work involved in, say, serving on a city committee. That's where Foley, chair of Mirick's Charitable and Civic Committee, said he and others must lead by example. For Foley, leading causes important to him personally, such as serving as president of the Emerald Club in sup- port of Mercy Center of Worcester for developmentally disabled adults, is the key to genuine leadership. "It trickles from the top down," Foley said. "That speaks volumes to the younger generation coming up." MORE SKIN IN THE GAME? Data shows smaller businesses are larger contributors to local charities than Fortune 500 companies. Online employee giving platform Bright Funds in 2021 cited industry reports saying small businesses donated 250% more money to local charitable causes than do their larger counterparts and small businesses donate an average of 6% of their profits to local causes, compared to 1% by Fortune 500 com- panies. For Tim Garvin, president and CEO of Worcester-based United Way of Central Massachusetts, it's no surprise the contri- butions of small companies and their employees add up to a large impact. United Way runs workplace cam- paigns in which each employee's small weekly paycheck contribution snow- balls and creates a formidable funding stream. "That one-dollar-a-week donation multiplied by 100 people becomes thousands of dollars," Garvin said. While the COVID-19 pandemic made it harder to pitch such cam- paigns in local offices as many people work remotely at least part-time, Garvin said he's struck by the growing sense of corporate responsibility to contribute to the local community. He saw it during the pandemic when companies rallied to meet local needs. "Everybody had this great desire to do something," Garvin said.
