Notes: N/A=not available. CORRECTION: Some law firms had reported statewide attorney & office counts as the local figure in previous years; WBJ worked with our Central Mass. law firms to correct this oversight in 2024. Lower local attorney & office counts year-over-year do not reflect downsizing, but a more accurate representation of the local Central Mass. presence of each firm. (1) Other practice areas include construction law and creditors' rights. (2) Other practice areas include elder law, Medicaid & special needs planning. (3) Includes construction law group (4) Other practice areas include municipal law, liquor liability, trucking & transportation and insurance coverage analysis. (5) Other practice areas include alternative dispute resolution and mediation. (6) Data from WBJ's 2023 survey -Compiled by: Stephanie R. Meagher, research@nebusinessmedia.com Mirick O'Connell has appoint- ed Paul Carey and Robert Kilroy as the Worcester law firm's first-ever co-managing partners since its founding in 1916. The duo are taking over for David Surprenant, who has served as managing partner at Mirick O'Connell for 22 years. Surprenant will remain with the practice as chairman of the firm, a newly created role in which he will offer his strategic guidance, according to a press release from Mirick O'Connell on April 9. Mirick is the largest law firm based in Central Massachusetts, with 64 local attorneys, accord- ing to data provided to the WBJ Research Department. Mirick ranks just ahead of the 54 local attorneys at Bowditch & Dewey and ahead of the 32 at Fletcher Tilton. All three law firms are based in Worcester. Kilroy, an employment litigator and former U.S. Marine Corps officer, has been a member of Mirick O'Connell's management committee since 2020 and previously served as marketing chair and chair of the legal office's labor, employment, and employee benefits group. Carey, who specializes in creditors' rights, bankruptcy, and business reorganization matters, has been with the firm since 1995. Along with Kilroy, he is a member of the firm's manage- ment committee in addition to acting as partner in the firm's creditors' rights, bankruptcy, and reorganization group, and he has held the role of hiring partner for the recruiting committee. Kilroy and Carey will continue their respective practices as they move into their senior leadership roles. – Story by Mica Kanner-Mascolo Law firm leader relinquishes role to partners David Surprenant
