12 HARTFORDBUSINESS.COM | JUNE 10, 2024 DEAL WATCH Truck driver training school seeking to buy land in Bristol By David Krechevsky davidk@hartfordbusiness.com A longtime commercial driver training school is seeking to acquire land in a Bristol industrial park to create a new training facility. Seymour-based Allstate Commer- cial Driver Training School is seeking to buy and develop lots 10 and 11 in the Southeast Bristol Business Park on Business Park Drive. The two wooded lots, with a combined 3.23 acres, are located behind ESPN's North Campus and adjacent to CMI Specialty Products Inc. They also are just west of the Pond Ridge Condominiums on Redstone Hill Road. The Bristol Planning Commission in mid-May unanimously approved a motion authorizing Mayor Jeff Caggiano to execute a purchase- and-sale agreement with Business Park LLC, which does business as Allstate Commercial Driver Training School. The LLC is owned by Vincent Maiorano and Christopher Maiorano, who own and operate the school. A potential sale price for the two lots was not disclosed. The city's Economic and Commu- nity Development board has also approved selling the two lots. Allstate wants to build a 12,000-square-foot building with 18 parking spaces. The building would house classroom and office space. The development also would include an outdoor "training field," described as "a paved area with cones to simulate driving maneuvers for students." Students work one-on-one with instructors, with three to four instruc- tors training approximately 15 to 25 students daily, the proposal states. Classes would be held seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Allstate has operated in Seymour, at 249 Pearl St., since 1975. According to its website, it also has a "satellite training and testing location" in Meriden. The proposal states the Bristol site would be a "new campus." Officials with Allstate could not be reached for comment. Connecticut, like the rest of the country, has faced a significant shortage of truck drivers. That led the state legislature in 2022 to pass a law that requires the Department of Correction to make space and technology available for inmates to prepare for and take a commercial driver's license test.
