In April, the duo took over as the first-ever co-manag- ing partners of the 108-year-old firm, completing a leadership transition in the work for a year. Surprenant will continue with the firm as chairman. Both attorneys have impressive track records with the firm and are regularly recog- nized by rating service Super Lawyers. ey are part of a team of 63 attorneys, making Mirck the 31st largest law firm in the Bay State in 2023, according to Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. Before he was a lawyer, Kilroy was a U.S. Marine Corps officer, having earned an undergraduate degree from WPI. It was during a stint as an instructor in weapons and tactics for the U.S. Navy that Kilroy realized he might do well as a litigator as he oen had to debate senior officers about how to deploy air defense tactics. At Mirick O'Connell, which primarily serves businesses and their executives, Kilroy specializes in employment litigation in defense of corporations and their executives. He formerly chaired the firm's labor, employment and employee benefits group and has served in various volunteer board positions, including a local hospital and chamber of commerce. Carey is a partner in the firm's creditor's rights, bankruptcy and reorganization group and was included in the 2024 Best Lawyers in America edition for his work in those areas. Outside the the Mirick offices, Carey serves on the boards of Cornerstone Bank and Community Legal Aid in Worcester, as well as the Upton Planning Board. - E.M. Mark Donahue President Fletcher Tilton, in Worcester Employees: 117 Residence: Northborough Colleges: University of New Hampshire, Suffolk Law School in Boston Whether it's the Worcester Business Development Corp.'s acquisition of 51 acres of the Saint-Gobain manufacturing campus, the ongoing development of the area surrounding the $160-million Polar Park stadium, or the development of over 750,000 square feet of commercial and industrial space in Shrewsbury, including the $53-million development of Edgemere Crossing at Flint Pond, it's hard to follow Central Mass. real estate developments without frequently seeing Donahue's name. Donahue has played a role in major real estate development projects in his nearly four decades with Fletcher Tilton, earning himself a selection as one of the best lawyers in America in 2023 by Best Lawyers, the oldest peer-review publication company in the legal profession. As the region's real estate has attracted wider interest, Donahue's local knowledge becomes a critical component of any project. It's not just development deals, as Donahue assists businesses with other types of support, including assistance with navigating the creation of joint ventures, receiving debt and equity financing, and any other topic a business owner might need advice on. Despite his longevity, he stays up-to-date with new types of businesses sprung up in Central Massachusetts, helping cannabis businesses navigate the myriad permits, licenses, and other red tape necessary to open. Donahue has risen to the moment of unexpected difficulties; in 2021, when the Fletcher Tilton office was impacted by an electrical fire, he quickly worked to relocate into an alternative space, keeping the 202-year-old law firm running. Donahue's knowledge of the Worcester business scene hasn't gone unnoticed, as he's frequently asked to moderate or contribute to events hosted by the likes of the Worcester Bar Association and the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce. - E.C.
