How people found phone numbers before Google and iPhones B y P e t e r V a n A l l e n M ainebiz has always sought out the latest business trends. Take for example the July 1995 issue of Mainebiz, which touted "a new phone book, with all the dull stuff removed." First, we should explain that phone books were things people used to find phone numbers, what we now call land- lines. Phone books were typically quite fat and were used to boost up small children at the dinner table. Back in 1995, the phone book in question — the one "with all the dull stuff removed" — was smaller than the standard phone book, just 5-by-8 inches, and featured larger print than the standard phone book. Yet, at 700 pages, it's not hard to see why it didn't sur- vive the advent of Google, which was founded in 1998. SP ONSORED BY FUN FACT: The August 1995 issue of Mainebiz had a real estate ad listing an "excep 3 bdrm contemp" in Portland's North Deering neighborhood for $103,000. We couldn't find that exact exceptional 3-bedroom contemporary, but in February 2024 the median sales price for a home in Cumberland County was $513,250. That's appreciation. agency partners to its Champion Circle program: NBT Insurance Agency in Norwich, N.Y.; Propel Insurance Agency in Alpharetta, Ga.; USI Insurance Services in Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y.; and USI of Florham Park, N.J. Another Round, a board game bar and café, said it will open at 549 Congress St. in Portland in May. Experience Maine, a full-service travel concierge and event planning company in Cumberland, expand- ed its services with the launch of Experience Maine Culinary in south- ern Maine. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine in South Portland added InStride Health, a national provider of pediatric anxiety and obsessive- compulsive disorder treatment, to its provider network. Maine Realty Advisors, a commercial real estate firm in Portland, rebranded as CoreFirms. Partners Bank in Sanford donated $10,000 to the Ogunquit Museum of American Art.
