require a specific approach to leadership if that institution is to continue to grow, impact the formation of future leaders who are committed to the common good and create opportunities for faculty and staff to grow in their area of expertise. It is by focusing on these principles, which are guided by the mission of the institution, that enduring success can be achieved. Worcester Business Journal Hall of Fame Anh Vu Sawyer, Executive director, Southeast Asian Coalition of Central After 4 decades of leading businesses and non-profits, I've learned these things: • Lean on the powerful resources that are currently untapped and misunderstood. One is the human ecology, such as resiliency and compassion. Another is the bountiful giftedness from refugees that is ready to be unleashed. Global migration caused by wars and famine will continue to increase and never cease. Much of the world population has been and will be refugees. This incredible energy created by thousands of years of glorious cultures, wisdom, and experience can be turned into something that can benefit the whole world, heal a broken world, bring peace, eradicate poverty, further goodwill, incite curiosity, and deepen and widen empathy. All of this while increasing wealth and stabilizing local and global economies. • Technology, innovation, and belonging are on the shortlist of businesses' best friends! • Never underestimate the power of the smallest members or groups of the society. Listen to them. Partner with them to make some of the greatest impacts. • Respectfully leveraging cultural diversity will bring lasting internal strength to businesses and organizations. • Strive for a balance between creating wealth without compromising our passion for justice. We can have wealth while making the world a kinder place for all. • Life is not a survival game, but a journey with others so that everyone and generations after them will survive and survive well. • (Strictly professional, not in terms of romance) "Dance" with as many as you can, just don't "go to bed" with them. • Don't be afraid of dreaming big. You never know. • Invest in human capital. Start with your own staff/employees; that is what will yield the greatest return on investment. Business Leader of the Year (Large business) Udit Batra CEO and President, Waters Corporation Diversity is a statement, inclusion is an act – Diversity is a corner- stone to innovation but without the act of inclusion, it goes nowhere. Seek to understand and not judge – Compassion matters – When you come from a point of compassion and respect for the other, you can more easily work through differences and ultimately see we are more similar than we are different. Work with people you like, respect and trust – Together you will achieve more and ultimately have a more enjoyable journey. Invest in your learning – Competence matters – It is only when you start to learn for the sake of learning do you become truly motivated. Run – there is more fun in running and falling once in a while than just walking – Courage matters –Keep running and you will learn to build resiliency and silence your inner critic along the way. Call your Mom – Do you work on something that your Mom would be proud of hearing about? Leave people and places better than you found them – do the deletion experiment. Would it be the same if you did not exist? True insight usually arises from orthogonal thinking –Diversity of thought and perspective leads to better results. The only way things don't change is if you give up – This is something my Dad still reminds me of. You must choose to not give up if you want things to change. Listen to understand but decide for yourself – Spend more time listening and engaging with your colleagues to learn the facts and to help inform the decisions that only you can make. Encourage the next generation – Invest in the talent and capabilities long before you need them. Business Leader of the Year (Nonprofit) Joy Murrieta, Executive director & co-founder, Main IDEA Youth & Arts Massachusetts BEST IDEAS AND KEY PHILOSOPHIES THAT HAVE HELPED ME AND MY GRASSROOTS NONPROFIT SUCCEED 1. Rely on others. You can do so much more as a team than you can as an individual. Listen, delegate, and let others lead alongside you. 2. Learn from others. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you and who have been doing the work longer than you; learn from their mistakes and victories. 3. Respect each other. Respect for the rights, dignity and integrity of others is essential for the well-being of the community. 4. Work hard, play hard. Pace yourself and make boundaries; it's easy to get carried away when you're excited and there's a lot of work to do, but remember you're human, not a robot, and consequently need things like rest and sleep and food and play. 5. Always be flexible and open to change. Circumstances often change without notice; the ability to adapt quickly to embrace new expectations and dreams is vital to thrive. 6. Stay Connected to Yourself. When the going gets tough, remember and find ways to connect to what drove you to start in the first place. 7. Stay Organized. Prioritize implementing frameworks that allow you to track, understand, and provide further capacity for growth. 8. Clearly Communicate. Take the time to listen and understand the needs of those around you; be honest and forthright about what you need to succeed. 9. Community is an Ecosystem. No person is an island, so stay humble; the work you do is one part of the ecosystem that so many others are already contributing to. 10. Take Heart. Leading takes a lot of courage and self-assurance, it is not for the faint of heart. Forgive and be gracious with yourself as you make mistakes, and let your passion push you onward into the unknown. Business Leader of the Year (Innovative) Bo Menkiti, Founder & CEO, The Menkiti Group Our Success Formula Being successful in business really comes down to the 3 P's: persistence, passion, and people. • Purpose: It's hard to be successful without also being passionate about what you're doing and when you have something that you believe in deeply, success comes more naturally. That intrinsic drive, motivation, and connection to the work is what keeps us at The Menkiti Group motivated and helps drive our success. • Persistence: The one thing that's clear in life is that you'll get knocked down and you have to have the passion and purpose that allows you to have the persistence to get up and go forward because those that go forward are the ones that ultimately succeed. • People: Finally, the people who you surround yourself with truly matters. Choosing wisely about the people who you choose to be in partnership with and surround yourself with makes a tremendous impact on who you are and who you become.
