Former Boston-based biotech firm debuts new CT HQ A nonprofit biotechnology company formerly based in Boston recently relocated to Connecticut. Cure Rare Disease, which seeks to develop treatments for rare and ultra-rare diseases, marked the opening of its renovated 30,000-square-foot lab and research space, located at 4 Research Drive in Woodbridge. Cure Rare Disease, with five employees, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded by Rich Horgan in 2018. Horgan initially founded the biotech company to help find a cure for his brother, Terry, who was diagnosed at the age of 3 with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder that progressively weakens and degenerates muscle. Terry Horgan died in October 2022, at age 27, during the early stages of the organization's first clinical trial for a potential treatment. President of Rocky Hill-based Makiaris Media buys out retiring owner The president of Makiaris Media recently purchased the business from its owner, who decided to retire after leading the Rocky Hill- based media planning and buying agency for 37 years. Donna Staples is now the owner and president of Makiaris Media. The previous owner was Irene Makiaris, who founded the company in 1987. Makiaris Media, which was founded in 1987, offers media consulting services, including research, analysis, plan- ning, buying, placement and post-buy follow-up across all media channels. HBJ FILE PHOTO PHOTO | CONTRIBUTED Bristol Health eliminates 60 positions in cost-cutting effort In an attempt to cut costs, Bristol Health, parent company to the financially struggling Bristol Hospital, announced that it has eliminated 60 positions as part of a broader cost-cutting effort. Bristol Health President and CEO Kurt Barwis said the hospital system laid off 21 employees and eliminated 21 vacant positions. The remaining positions were eliminated through "improved staffing management." The staff reductions will result in approximately $6.1 million in savings, and they came after Bristol Health reported a $12.8 million operating loss in fiscal 2023, Barwis said. Bristol Health has been working with consultants over the past year or so to get advice on how to turn around its struggling financial position. The health system at the end of its 2022 fiscal year violated a financial covenant tied to a $34.6 million bond offering it was issued in 2019. Hartford HealthCare names new central region president Hartford HealthCare announced the appointment of Gina L. Calder as the next president of its central region, effective Sept. 1. The central region includes MidState Medical Center in Meriden and The Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. Calder currently serves as president of Barnes-Jewish St. Peter's Hospital and Progress West Hospital, both in Missouri and members of the BJC Health System serving Missouri, Illinois and Kansas. She will succeed Gary Havican, who was recently hired by Long Island, New York-based Catholic Health as executive vice president and chief operating officer. Gina L. Calder Middletown-based Charles IT opens second office in Stamford Charles IT, a cybersecurity company based in Middletown that serves the Northeast, has expanded its footprint into Fair- field County with a new office in Stamford. The office, at 1055 Washington Blvd., features a modern work- space designed for collabora- tion, productivity and to foster creativity, the company said. The company said the new office "reflects Charles IT's commitment to growth and exceptional service for their clients in the southern Connecticut and metropolitan New York areas." TRUMPF Inc.'s president and CEO joins AdvanceCT board of directors Lutz Labisch, the president and CEO of Farmington-based TRUMPF Inc., has been named to the board of directors of AdvanceCT, a nonprofit organi- zation that promotes Connecticut to businesses. AdvanceCT's board is led by Adam Norwitt, CEO of Amphenol Corp., and Judy Olian, president of Quinnipiac University, who
