Established in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas to preserve historical documents, the
American Antiquarian Society is home to the country's largest and most
accessible collection of books, pamphlets, broadsides, newspapers, and other
early American documents.

While on a two-year tour of Europe, Stephen Salisbury II
commissioned Samuel Morse, the artist and inventor, to
paint this Italian landscape. The painting is one of the
many works of art left to the Worcester Art Museum by
its founder, Stephen Salisbury III.
