City of Worcester: 300 Years 15
Union Station
View of the new and old Union Stations, c. 1915.
The Union Passenger Station (old Union Station),
built between 1874-1875 was a response to the
increasing railroad traffic in Worcester. It is
estimated that by 1898 there were 90 trains a day
bringing approximately 10,000 passengers. Largely
due to the ground level train tracks, which had
caused a number of accidents and the building's
inability to adequately handle an increased
volume of passengers, a new station was planned.
The new Union Station, completed in 1911, exists
today due to preservation efforts in the 1990s.
The tower of the old station remained until it was
demolished to make way for route 290.
