14 Harding Green experience has been nothing but positive. We've been able to grow and sustain our business over the almost five years we've been open. The community far and wide has been very supportive. We've formed solid friendships with our brother and sister businesses within the building." The eatery quickly became a favorite for those looking for a unique dining experience; two months after opening, the owners built out the space. Birch Tree has expanded four times since locating at Crompton Place. When Nicole DiCello was looking for a place to open a bookstore, she often passed by Crompton Place and thought it would make the perfect venue for her business. The renovated factory was fully occupied at the time, but she waited patiently until a vacancy did arise. Her initial instincts proved to be accurate; not only is her business growing, but she has found tremendous camaraderie with the other businesses in Crompton Place. "The response has been amazing. It's far beyond what I thought it would be," she said. "All the retail businesses complement each other." Bedlam Book Café stocks its shelves with a wide range of used books from library sales and a smoothie bar at the back of the store serves healthy and interesting beverag- es. DiCello also hosts events, book signings, author and food-oriented events and has created her own "mock- tails." Plants, people and produce Another success story is Seed to Stem, a shop that sells live plants, crystals and home gift items. "We were locat- ed on Shrewsbury Street for about five years before mak- ing the move to Crompton Place in 2016. Since moving to our current location, our business has grown tremen- dously. We even re-located within the building to a larger space to accommodate our growing needs," said Virginia Orlando, co-owner. "Being with other entrepreneurs that share a common goal of creating a destination within the city has been very beneficial. Our landlord, Dino Lorusso, has been so supportive of all of the businesses housed within Crompton Place, as well as in the surrounding neighborhood. We feel very lucky to be here, especially in this exciting time of growth for the city." In addition to the retail shops, Crompton Place is home to Oak Hill Community Development Corporation, an ar- chitectural firm, Table Talk offices and a barbershop, locat- ed on the second floor. The top floor is residential. "Right now we are at full occupancy. Retail space and apartments are in demand," Lorusso said, emphasizing that residents are key to the vitality and growth of the Canal District. "It's important to have people living here."
