The growing immigrant population prompted Worcester gov- ernment leaders to initiate programs to connect the diverse ethnic groups in the City. These ef- forts would lead to the Americanization of the different nationalities and, ultimately, the demise of the thriving Water Street area. The creation of English language programs, health centers, and playgrounds, parks and neighborhood schoolyards helped to acclimate children and families to the American way of life. As these immigrants engaged more in community activities, they be- came immersed in a lifestyle that differed significantly from the one they experienced in Europe. In time, many of these immigrants began to apply for American citizenship. Furthermore, many Jewish entrepreneurs and business owners en- joyed tremendous financial success. But as their fortunes grew, they sought bigger and better housing accommodations and families began moving to Worcester's more affluent West side. Tenements located above storefronts remained unoccupied and were eventually Water Street looking north no. 126 left and 129 right (1960).
