Historic Preservation
The firm's strong belief in
preserving the historic significance
of a structure is clearly evident in
all projects from its earliest day.
During the 1980s, LPA|A began to
earn recognition for these efforts.
Preservation Worcester bestowed
Excellence in Design Awards on
LPA|A for the Worcester Academy
Student Center and for the Becker
College Academic Center in 1988
and 1989, respectively.
Additionally, the Massachusetts
Historical Commission, the
Association of General Contractors
of Massachusetts and the New
Hampshire/Massachusetts Masonry
Institute honored LPA|A with various
awards.
LPA|A's major historic
preservation accomplishment of
this decade came in 2008 when the
Hanover Theatre for the Performing
Arts reopened after years of work.
Originally constructed in 1904,
this local historical treasure had
undergone several iterations before
all activity ceased, leaving the
building empty and in disrepair.
LPA|A faced the daunting task of
designing and reconstructing the
theatre without the benefit of original
design drawings. After 18 months
of diligent work, intense research,
close examination of historic
photos and creative ingenuity, the
firm recreated original decorative
elements and color schemes.
Regarded as one of the best
restoration efforts from this period in
American history, Worcester's oldest
vaudeville theatre was restored to its
former glory and is a prime example
of impressive architectural quality.
The Hanover Theatre restoration
earned several awards for
LPA|A, including a nod from
the Massachusetts Historical
Commission and Preservation
Massachusetts in 2009, and
the National Trust for Historic
Preservation in 2010.
