Fortunately, 2000 arrived with
barely a splash and life continued
much as it had before. Like all the
decades before, and some yet to
come, the business world would
experience its share of ups and
downs into the 21st century.
Technology continued to
dominate as the Internet and sites
such as Facebook and Twitter
exploded, becoming innovative
communications and social media
platforms. Recessions bookended
the decade, starting in the aftermath
of September 11, 2001 and ending
with the housing and credit crises
that defined the Great Recession of
2008, and sent the country reeling
for 18 months.
Academic Accomplishments and
More
LPA|A had enjoyed a long run of
academic projects in the 1990s;
however, legislation was about to
limit opportunities for educational
projects.
In the early 2000s, the School
Building Assistance Program within
the Department of Education
determined that spending on
school construction had risen
significantly and passed a reform
act. This five-year moratorium on
public school construction definitely
impacted LPA|A's workload; school
construction had served as the
backbone of the firm in the preceding
decade.
However, before the moratorium
was implemented the firm had been
in discussions with area towns
regarding school projects. LPA|A
was able to proceed and complete
schools for the Towns of Sterling,
Spencer and Shrewsbury, and
2000s: A New Century
At the turn of the century,
the world buzzed with
anticipation, excitement
and anxiety. Dire Y2K
predictions fostered
uncertainty and fear
around the global
economy; businesses
prepared for a sharp
decline in the stock
market due to potential
technological meltdowns.
