Dexter-Russell 73 1818 Henry Harrington establishes the first cutlery factory in the United States. 1833 Isaac P. Hyde born in Stafford Springs, Connecticut. 1834 John Russell founds the John Russell Manufacturing Company, the first factory built on the Green River in Greenfield, MA. His company made fixed blade knives. 1836 John Russell and his brother Francis Russell form a partnership with Henry Clapp and establish J. Russell and Co., which was also advertised as the J Russell Co. Green River Works. 1837 Henry Harrington recognized as one of the foremost gunsmiths in New England. 1840 Production of the Green River Knife begins. 1846 The arrival of the railroad facilitates transportation and prompts a fourfold increase in business at the John Russell Cutlery Company. 1849 Henry Harrington's son Theodore establishes his own cutlery business. 1861 Ownership of the company is transferred to Henry Harrington's son, Dexter. 1862 The firm becomes known as Dexter Harrington & Son. 1862 John Russell retires from active business. 1866 The Turners Falls Company moves the Green River Works to Turners Falls. 1868 Construction begins on a new facility for the Green River Works in Turners Falls. 1868 Company changes its name to John Russell Manufacturing Company. 1870 The new John Russell Cutlery Company building in Turners Falls is completed. 1872 The Theodore Harrington Knife factory hires Isaac Hyde as superintendent. 1873 Green River Works changes its name to John Russell Cutlery Company; bankruptcy precipitated the name change. 1874 John Russell dies. 1875 John Russell Cutlery Company begins producing Barlow-design folding knives. 1875 Isaac Hyde launches I.P. Hyde & Company to manufacture shoe knives, mill blades and tools for cutting cloth. 1876 Henry Harrington dies. 1878 Charles Dexter Harrington, Henry's grandson and Dexter's son, graduates from college and joins his father in the business. 1881 I.P. Hyde changes its name to Hyde Manufacturing Company. 1884 Charles Harrington convinces his father to apply the name "Dexter" to the knives. 1890 John Russell Cutlery Company begins making custom engraved knives for stores nationwide. 1891 Charles Harrington becomes a partner and the company name is changed to D. Harrington & Son. 1897 Myron B. Clemence, together with the plant manager, buys out Isaac Hyde and assumes ownership of the company. Timeline
