ANOTHER LEGACY
When Charles Harrington assumed his leadership role, D. Harrington & Son
held a secure place in the industry due to its reputation for excellence. He ran the
company for the next 13 years before selling the business in 1924 to the Southbridge
Investment Company for $300,000. Charles designated half of the money as the
initial funding for a local hospital and stipulated that the town of Southbridge
raise a match of $150,000 to construct Harrington Memorial Hospital. e town
wholeheartedly engaged in an ambitious fundraising campaign and easily met the
challenge. e hospital opened its doors to the public in 1931 and continues to serve
the town, as well as more than 25 communities across south central Massachusetts
and northeastern Connecticut. roughout the last 87 years, Harrington Memorial
Hospital has grown in physical size, scope of services and programs, and staffing,
thanks to the generosity of the Harrington family. n
