Dexter-Russell 7 F rom its inception, the United States has relied on small businesses – those that employ fewer than 500 people – to keep the country's economic engine running. Currently, the nation boasts some 28.8 million small businesses, according to the Small Business Administration. But not all companies enjoy longevity. Only approximately two-thirds of small companies survive for two years; half remain in business for five years; and only one-third manage to reach their tenth anniversary. ese statistics make the Dexter story even more impressive. e business began 200 years ago in a small one-man workshop on the outskirts of Southbridge. e original company, which relied on basic tools and the skills of a single craftsman, has blossomed into a state-of-the-art operation that employs highly trained workers; utilizes the latest technological advances, processes and machinery to improve efficiency and productivity; collaborates with customers to develop ideas and bring them to market; focuses on employees first; and embraces a family values culture. In combination, these factors differentiate Dexter from other companies and are largely responsible for its continued existence. Admittedly, Dexter's history has not been without its challenges. Natural disasters, economic uncertainty and changing markets, among other obstacles have tested the leadership and the stability of the company. But, thanks to informed decision- making, adaptability, good relationships with both customers and employees, Dexter has emerged a stronger company each time. is book chronicles Dexter's 200-year journey, from a history of its founder, Henry Harrington, to the company structure as it stands today. ese pages offer a look at the successes and near failures; acquisitions and mergers; ever-evolving product lines and operational processes; and plans for the future that form the fabric of the business. is story also serves as a tribute to the key ingredient to Dexter's success – its employees. From the early days in the company's history, employees have been viewed as vital to the success of the business. Without them, there would be no company. While Dexter's product line has changed dramatically with the times – the company no longer manufactures cigar knives – it still embraces the principles of its founder. Henry Harrington's industriousness, creativity and penchant for excellence are reflected in every aspect of the company and serve as a blueprint by which Dexter continues to operate. is photo-journalistic depiction attempts to present the reader with an understanding of Dexter and how it has managed to remain successful in an oftentimes-turbulent business climate. e book also explains where the company has been, where it is today and where it plans to be in the future. Enjoy the journey! n Introduction
