FuelCell Energy opens North America's 2nd-largest fuel cell park in Derby D anbury-based FuelCell Energy has completed the second-largest fuel cell park in North America, a 14-megawatt facility situated along the Housatonic River in Derby. The park on Roosevelt Drive consists of 10 fuel cells, which convert natural gas into electricity through an electrochemical process that is virtually emissions-free. The facility will supply power to Eversource and United Illuminating through 20-year power purchase agreements, providing energy for tens of thousands of homes, officials said. FuelCell Energy also operates the largest fuel cell park in North America, located in Bridgeport. Dan O'Keefe to be next CT economic development chief Gov. Ned Lamont's choice to oversee economic development in Connecticut is Daniel H. O'Keefe, who left the technology investment world earlier this year and talked himself into a job as the state's first chief innovation officer. He will replace Alexandra Daum, a former real estate executive who is leaving the administration early next year for a position at Yale University. In O'Keefe, the governor once again is tapping an executive with deep experience in finance: He has 25 years of investment experience, most recently as the managing partner of Apax Digital, a global firm based in New York. Like Daum, O'Keefe has an MBA from Harvard. He joined DECD, answering to Daum, on July 5. In the few months he's been leading the state's innovation efforts, traveling around the state to meet with businesses and local leaders, O'Keefe said he's encountered a lot of skep- ticism. He wants to see that perspective change. "So, what I decided to do is start talking about reasons for optimism," he said in remarks at a recent event in Darien. Lambiase will stay with the company as a senior sales representative. Expanding East Hartford credit union seeks another merger An East Hartford-based credit union that has been active in the M&A market is looking to merge with a small Putnam credit union that serves Day Kimball Hospital employees. America's First Network Credit Union is asking permission from the state Department of Banking to merge with Northeastern Connecticut Healthcare Credit Union in Putnam. America's First would be the surviving entity. Northeastern serves healthcare employees in a 13-town area. The proposed merger date is Feb. 1, 2024. America's First has $74.7 million in assets, 6,906 members and a branch presence in North Haven, Trumbull, Groton, Hartford and East Hartford, according to National Credit Union Administration data. Northeastern has $10.1 million in assets and 1,704 members, with a single branch at Day Kimball Hospital. America's First is led by CEO Nich- olas Moalli, who told the HBJ in 2020 that he had plans to double the size of his credit union over five years. At the time, in February 2020, the credit union had $36 million in assets and was in the process of acquiring North Haven-based Connecticut Federal Credit Union and Hartford's CT Transit Federal Credit Union. CT workers' compensation rates drop 10% Gov. Ned Lamont announced that businesses in Connecticut will pay an average of 10% less in workers' compensation insurance starting Jan. 1, 2024.
