Talcott Financial opens downtown Hartford HQ; commits to creating 51 new jobs I nternational life insurer Talcott Financial Group recently debuted its new downtown Hartford headquarters in the Boat Building, at One American Row. Talcott also announced that it will receive $1.1 million in tax rebates through the state Department of Economic and Community Development's JobsCT program, contingent upon it retaining 389 jobs and creating 51 new full-time jobs over the next seven years. Talcott has relocated from Windsor to the 13-story Boat Building, where it occupies about 52,000 square feet across four floors. The light- filled, modern offices include collaboration and huddle spaces, kitchen cafés on every floor and a 30-seat boardroom. Talcott focuses on insuring the annuity and life insurance marketplace and has more than $130 billion in assets under management. The company has other offices in New York and Bermuda, and is an affiliate of global investment firm Sixth Street. Wife of late Subway co- founder Fred DeLuca makes largest-ever gift to UConn UConn announced it has received its largest-ever gift that will support construction of a new nursing school as well as new programs and scholarships that aim to combat the state's nursing shortage. Alumna Elisabeth DeLuca (1969) has made a $40 million gift to UConn that will provide schol- arships and programmatic support to the School of Nursing. It will also support construction of a state-of-the-art School of Nursing facility in Storrs. DeLuca, a former nurse at Bridgeport Hospital, is the widow of Subway co-founder Fred DeLuca. When he died in 2015, he left 50% of the company to his wife, according to published reports. In August, Subway was sold to private equity firm Roark Capital for an undisclosed sum. The Wall Street Journal reported the Milford-based sandwich chain was getting an $9 billion-plus offer. Meantime, the state Bond Commission recently approved $30 million for UConn to finance the planning, design and construc- tion of the new nursing school. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2024, and be completed in 2026. DeLuca's gift provides addi- tional funds that are critical to the project, UConn said. DeLuca's gift will also allow UConn to hire more nursing faculty so it can increase enrollment from 175 students today to a minimum of 250 students. Former GOP state lawmaker Davis to lead CBIA's lobbying team The Connecticut Business & Industry Association has tapped a former GOP state lawmaker as its new top lobbyist. Chris Davis, who is currently the public affairs manager at the quasi-public Connecticut Lottery Corp., will join CBIA as vice presi- dent of public policy Oct. 30, the state's largest business group announced. He will succeed Eric Gjede, who is leaving CBIA to join Statehouse Associates, an Avon-based lobbying firm run by Andy Markowski. Davis represented the General Assembly's 57th House District from 2011 to 2021, serving as ranking member of the key Finance, Revenue, and Bonding Committee. Yale New Haven Health acquires PhysicianOne Urgent Care The Yale New Haven Health system announced it has acquired PhysicianOne Urgent Care, which has locations in Connecticut, Massa- chusetts and New York. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. YNHH has had a clinical affiliation with PhysicianOne for the past six years, and system leaders called integrating the 24/7 urgent care provider a natural next step as part of its expansion efforts. The state Department of Public Health approved the acquisition in August. PhysicianOne Urgent Care has 18 locations in Connecticut, six in Massachusetts and three in New York. It provides on-site care during business hours, plus 24/7, year-round, locally-staffed telehealth services. Lynne Rosen, CEO of PhysicianOne Urgent Care, said of the deal, "The combined strengths of our organizations are aligned to improve the experience and clinical care for our patients." Avangrid pulls plug on Park City Wind contracts Avangrid announced earlier this month that it will terminate its power-purchase agreements for Park City Wind, an 804-megawatt offshore wind project in Bridgeport. The Orange-based company, which owns United Illuminating, said it had entered into agreements to terminate its contracts with electric distribution companies. The offshore wind farm, expected UConn's current School of Nursing building (shown above) is located in Storrs Hall on Glenbrook Road, in Storrs. PHOTO | CONTRIBUTED Chris Davis Lynne Rosen
