With my leadership, we made a comeback from COVID, brought back the Broderson Awards in person, reinvented the Joan Dow Award to acknowledge the amazing women in Maine's advertising and creative industry, and brought back student scholarships. Passion project: I am creating a Wikia for my mother's family tree and writing down all of the unique stories from the lives lived in the past and present. Audacious goal: To serve and represent the great state of Maine as governor or senator one day, following the examples of Angus King and Joshua Chamberlain. Favorite quote: "Courage is a habit." — Anonymous Influential book: "Fahrenheit 451," by Ray Bradbury Favorite movie: "Star Wars: A New Hope" How do you recharge: Long drives. Throwing a bag in the car and driving two-plus hours in any direction in Maine. Getting back to nature on the rocky coast, deep in the woods or atop a mountain. A Portland entrepreneur founds a nonprofit to serve Black-owned businesses Rose Barboza, 33 Executive director, Black Owned Maine General manager/event curator, Oga Suya Nigerian Catering and Events Principal consultant, Barboza Consulting Significant professional accomplishment: I have been living the entrepreneur life 100% for three years now and founded all of my companies during the pandemic. Each company fills a different void but they all combat various social issues. Passion project: I am taking Cape Verdean Kriolu courses to bet- ter get in touch with my culture. Unfortunately, my language was not taught to me as a child so I am tak- ing it upon myself to become fluent. This experience has allowed me to better understand myself and my ancestors. Audacious goal: I want to own five houses around the world — naturally, this means I need to be fluent in five or more lan- guages — and own businesses around the world. Favorite quote: The Serenity Prayer: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Influential book: "The Autobi- ography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley" Favorite movie: This is a hard one. I don't watch many movies or TV shows, but if I had to choose I would pick "Fight Club." It's a classic, in my opinion. How do you recharge: Just staying home and hanging out with my son and husband. Sounds sim- ple but it is the best thing I can do for myself because I am always go, go, go. A breast health researcher and entrepreneur Kendra Batchelder, 34 Co-founder, WAVED Medical LLC Significant professional accomplishment: My proud- est achievement has been earning my Ph.D. in com- putational biomedicine from the University of Maine in 2023. Concurrently, I co-founded my first startup, WAVED Medical LLC, aimed at bringing breast can- cer risk assessment technology to the marketplace. Audacious goal: My audacious goal is to establish a health care company that leverages cutting-edge technology to empower patients and their health care providers to make informed decisions together. Because most diagnosed breast cancer instances lack identifiable risk factors, WAVED Medical is devel- oping an image-based risk assessment approach for breast imaging centers. This method will aim to pin- point women with an elevated risk of breast cancer by analyzing their breast tissue composition on mammo- grams, allowing them to decide on the best screening and prevention methods with their providers. Passion project: My passion projects are educating about the newest breast cancer research and also supporting initiatives such as the Find it Early Act that would require costs of additional screenings or diag- nostic imaging for women at higher risk of breast can- cer or those with dense breasts to be covered without any out of pocket costs. Favorite quote: "The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up." — Mark Twain Influential book: "The Secret," by Rhonda Byrne Favorite series: "The Curse of Oak Island" and "Big Brother" How do you recharge: I recharge with my family by spending time in nature.
