BARKHAMSTED HIGHWAY GARAGE HARWINTON GARAGE WATERFORD PUBLIC WORKS Highland Park Market buys Manchester butcher shop building for $1.25M By Michael Puffer mpuffer@hartfordbusiness.com T he Manchester location of butcher shop Bogner Quality Meats recently sold to grocery chain Highland Park Market for $1.25 million. Highland Park Market, a multi-gen- erational grocer with locations in Manchester, Glastonbury and Farm- ington, bought the 1965-vintage Bogner Quality Meats building on 5.7 acres at 349 Wetherell St., in a sale recorded by the town on Aug. 21. Highland Park Market Presi- dent Timothy M. Devanney said his company plans to refurbish the 19,438-square-foot building to serve as storage, as well as a centralized bakery and kitchen for prepared foods sold at his three markets. The transition to a single production facility will allow for better quality controls and a more reliable supply of prepared foods, Devanney said. It will also pave the way for potential future expansion. Devanney said the renovation will take place in phases. Bogner Quality Meats will be able to continue its retail operations in a portion of the Manchester building for a year, before Highland Park claims that space as well, he said. A representative from Bogner's declined comment. Devanney said his company for years has been searching for a site to centralize its food-preparation and baking operations. The Bogner building is in a convenient location and offers refrigerated space, he noted. Currently, employee absences at one store can nearly derail prepared- foods production at that site. Devanney recalled when a couple of employees were out at one grocery store location, forcing his brother to spend days working in the kitchen to keep products available. "If things are centrally located, it will make it easier to adapt," Devanney said. "It's going to be safeguarding our future, where we can get a consistent product." 349 Wetherell St., Manchester.
