The $2.2 billion industry consists of 484 companies that together account for 9,540 jobs or 4.2% of Maine's total exports; the companies have an average annual income of $108,000. Within life sciences, a cluster of companies from established players to startups have put Greater Portland on the map for veterinary health innovation. "It's no surprise to me that Maine is emerging as a center of veterinary health innovation and startup activity," says Benjamin Chesler, director of venture creation and acceleration at Northeastern University's Roux Institute in Portland. "If I were starting a company in the space, I'd be looking at Maine to launch my venture because there is an existing pool of talent here to tap into."
