Maine's life sciences sector, which includes several
fast-growing biotechnology and health care startups,
has a far-reaching economic impact, as shown in the
latest state of the industry report by the Bioscience
Association of Maine. The $2.2 billion industry
consists of 484 companies that together account
for 9,540 jobs or 4.2% of Maine's total exports; the
companies have an average annual income of
$108,000. Within life sciences, a cluster of companies
from established players to startups have put
Greater Portland on the map for veterinary health
innovation. "It's no surprise to me that Maine is
emerging as a center of veterinary health innovation
and startup activity," says Benjamin Chesler, director
of venture creation and acceleration at Northeastern
University's Roux Institute in Portland. "If I were
starting a company in the space, I'd be looking at
Maine to launch my venture because there is an
existing pool of talent here to tap into."
